HOW TO CARE FOR AND CLEAN SILVER JEWELRY
HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR SILVER JEWELRY
AllCoolSilverChic jewelry is made of 925 silver, also called sterling silver. This means that it contains 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals to give it hardness and strength, since pure silver is relatively soft. Here are some suggestions for caring for silver jewelry:
- Put on your jewelry after using cosmetic products, such as perfumes, cosmetics, creams, etc.
- Avoid using it in the sea, the pool or during sports.
- Remove them before using corrosive products that damage silver, zircons, stones or pearls (for example cleaning products, mercury and iodine).
- The pearls are especially delicate, avoid contact with any chemicals.
- Store your jewelry separately to prevent scratches, your earrings with their nuts on (so they don't get lost), and close bracelets and necklaces to prevent them from getting tangled (if they are wrapped much better).
- Avoid storing or displaying them in places with humidity or heat.
- It is advisable to periodically check the closures on earrings, necklaces and bracelets, which may have opened due to use.
- Clean your jewelry with a cotton cloth after wearing it.
HOW TO CLEAN SILVER JEWELRY
Silver is known to yellow and darken over time. And not only due to contact with cosmetics, sweat or chemicals, but also due to Hydrogen Sulfide in the air, which causes silver to blacken. This does not mean poor quality. It is a completely natural reaction of silver called sulfidation, by which a thin surface layer of silver sulfide forms on the jewelry, the color of which is black. You will also find this line of jewelry known as old silver or oxidized silver at CoolSilverChic .
But how to shine those jewels again? There are different ways, here are two in which we use Bicarbonate:
- For pieces that contain any decoration such as stones, pearls, zircons, etc. The ideal is to use some natural remedy that does not damage them. We can make a paste with baking soda and a little water, add it to a cotton cloth and rub the jewel, avoiding touching the ornaments. Then rinse with water until residue is removed and finally dry and polish with a soft cotton cloth. It is not recommended to use a toothbrush if the decorations are glued on, as they may come off.
- For silver pieces without ornaments, we heat water to a boil, we add a tablespoon of baking soda and we put it in a container previously lined with aluminum foil, with its shiny side facing up, we put the jewelry inside the container in contact with the paper and we also add aluminum shavings on top. In a few minutes we check how the jewelry is, stir and let it rest for about 15 minutes. We rinse with plenty of water and dry and polish with a soft cotton cloth.
When the jewelry is very dirty and cannot be cleaned properly with the homemade baking soda method, you can use silver cleaning products, but extreme caution must be taken if you have ornaments made of another material so as not to damage them.
